While everyone agrees that by responding quickly and locally to the appearance of new cases of cholera, the chances of stopping the epidemic or at least slowing its spread are multiplied. The actions and scope of this response remain open to question. The CATI project coordinated by Flavio Finger for Epicentre and whose first evaluation phase has just been launched in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) aims to evaluate the effectiveness of responses made up of a basket of actions aimed at containing transmission in several ways.

On 30 June and 1 July, a workshop on tuberculosis was held at Epicentre's Mbarara Research Centre. The Centre has extensive experience in TB research and several studies conducted within the Centre have just been completed. This workshop gave an opportunity to review the latest studies conducted on tuberculosis by Epicentre and its partners to reduce the burden of this disease in Africa.

A year ago, Epicentre, together with MSF teams in the DRC, launched a large-scale study to better understand the impact of preventive oral vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas and the subsequent spread of cholera. In this study funded by the Wellcome Trust, UK AID and the Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Office, a new phase has just begun to study where the Vibrio cholerae bacteria hides in the home environment, through home follow-up of patients who tested positive and their household members.
