Studies carried out following the first vaccination campaign during a hepatitis E epidemic in the Bentiu camp in South Sudan reveal significant results. In The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a two-dose vaccine regimen was shown to be effective and particularly suited to humanitarian contexts, where this disease transmitted by contaminated water is rife. In The Lancet Global Health, we present findings on a large cohort that provide strong evidence of the safety of the vaccine for pregnant women. These advances offer renewed hope in the face of a currently untreatable disease that is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and have already helped to change international recommendations.
