In a recent study carried out in Niger and funded by EDCTP*, Epicentre assessed the impact and feasibility of mass vaccination campaigns with a single dose and a fractional dose of the 10-valent pneumococcal vaccine, to combat pneumococcal infections. The results of the study in favor of the use of fractional doses could facilitate access to this vaccine in low- and middle-income countries, where low vaccination coverage may necessitate mass campaigns, or in humanitarian emergencies. Interview with Dr Issaka Soumana, head of the study in Niger, on the main results of this clinical trial and their implications for public health.

Acute malnutrition, alone or combined with other pathologies, remains one of the main causes of infant mortality in Mali. The StimNut study, carried out in Koutiala, eastern region of Mali, demonstrated the benefits of integrating psychosocial stimulation into existing nutritional care at health centers and pediatric hospitals. This innovative intervention not only benefits malnourished children but also supports their caregivers’ well-being. On the strength of these results, the intervention should be soon extended to other similar contexts, in Mali and elsewhere.
