The first symptoms that appear in people infected with the Ebola virus are very similar to those of other endemic diseases in regions affected by epidemics of this hemorrhagic fever. So how do you distinguish people who have contracted Ebola from others? Are some signs more distinctive than others? A study published in The Lancet Infectious Disease lays the foundations for an algorithm to define the risk of developing Ebola in people with clinical signs suggestive of Ebola infection.

Measles is often considered a mild disease, particularly as it is preventable thanks to vaccination. However, it can be serious or even fatal, especially in malnourished or unwell children. While vaccination has reduced the number of global deaths considerably, with a decrease of 73% from 2000 to 2018, between 150,000 and 200,000 people still die from this disease each year, predominantly children under five living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, WHO recorded a 79% increase in global cases over the first two months of 2022 versus the same period in 2021. It appears that the upswing that started in 2016 is continuing, or even worsening, which reinforces the importance of continuing the fight against this infectious disease.

Malnutrition in young children can have long-term and potentially irreversible consequences, particularly on the cognitive level. Providing nutritional care and medical treatment to malnourished children is not enough; psychosocial stimulation is also necessary: this is the purpose of the StimNut study, which aims to adapt this approach to the Malian context and implement it.

No new cases of Ebola have been confirmed since November 27 in Uganda, where an outbreak was declared on September 20 by authorities. While MSF teams remain mobilized and provide support to the Ugandan Ministry of Health in Ebola treatment centers and through health promotion and infection control activities, the epidemic is still a major challenge for the country. Denis Ardiet, an epidemiologist at Epicentre, is coordinating a team of seven people involved in the fight against the Ebola epidemic. He provides an update on the situation.

The lack of easy-to-use, reliable and affordable diagnostic tests for tuberculosis reduces the capacity to control the disease. In a publication in The Lancet Global Health, Helena Huerga and other colleagues show that the FujiLAM test is a promising option for diagnosing TB in people living with HIV. However, problems with batch-to-batch test performance variability remain a barrier to its clinical deployment.
