Pratiques de prescription d'antibiotiques
Antimicrobial resistance is a global challenge. Considering that very few paediatric antibiotic (ATB) development programmes are being delivered within an appropriate time frame, this study is planned to inform the ATB prescribing practices for the management of common paediatric infections in 4 health structures of different level of care in Niger and Uganda. The aim is first to explore a range of opinions, perspectives, practices and challenges amongst the healthcare workers (HCW) who prescribe, dispense or administer ATB in the selected health structure. In addition, we will explore knowledge, perceptions, attitudes towards ATB and their use by the caregiver. This study will describe the constraints that HCW and caregivers face related to ATB treatment in children and HCW. It will provide qualitative data on drug prescribing practices. This study will contribute to inform the design of ongoing and futures paedatric programmes, antibiotic stewardship practices, and access strategies.
Objective
Improve understanding of ATB prescribing practices of HCW ; identify main constraints related to ATB treatment in chlidren <17 years ; better understand knowledge / prescription & use of ATB by caregivers ; identifiy improvement startegies for children ATB treatment
Methodology
Mixed methods study design comprising of a) Qualitative semi-structured interviews for healthcare workers and focus group discussions for caregivers of children under 17 years of age and b) Retrospective quantitative descriptive registry-based study of hospital encounters and drug prescriptions.
