Sheila Isanaka mène des études épidémiologiques à grande échelle dans des contextes complexes en utilisant à la fois des modèles d'observation et des modèles randomisés pour documenter la pratique et la politique dans le domaine de la nutrition mondiale. A Epicentre depuis 2011, le travail de Sheila s'est concentré sur l'étude de la malnutrition aiguë sévère (MAS), aussi bien sur le diagnostic, l'estimation, le traitement et la prévention. Plus de 52 millions d'enfants dans le monde souffrent de malnutrition aiguë, et 875 000 décès d'enfants de moins de 5 ans sont à déplorer. Son travail s'étend également à d'autres disciplines pour explorer l'interaction entre la malnutrition et les maladies infectieuses, ainsi que le rôle de la nutrition maternelle dans la santé et le développement de l'enfant.
